Co-Founder
Hi, I’m Diego Espinoza! My passion is helping students succeed, and that comes from my journey. I was born in Mexico and moved to Salinas, California, with my family in middle school. It wasn’t an easy transition—there were tough times, like experiencing homelessness and figuring out my identity in a completely new environment. But something my mom always said stuck with me: “The one thing no one can take away from you is your education.”
That mindset got me through a lot. Books like The Circuit by Francisco Jimenez opened my eyes to the power of education and inspired me to keep going. High school was challenging, especially transitioning out of English Language Development classes, but I had a turning point when a recruiter from CSU Monterey Bay showed me what was possible.
College wasn’t easy—I even ended up on academic probation at one point. However, when I became a peer mentor for the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP), I found my purpose. Supporting students gave me the motivation to push through. I graduated with honors from CSU Monterey Bay in 2015 and later earned a master’s degree from Santa Clara University.
After college, I worked at Mission College, serving as the STEM Pipeline Coordinator and later as the Director of EOPS, CARE, and CalWORKS. These roles allowed me to work closely with students, providing resources and support to help them achieve their goals.
Now, I’m a doctoral student at San Diego State University, and my mission is simple: to remind students that they have what it takes to succeed, no matter what obstacles come their way.
Today, I’m proud to serve as the Dean of Counseling, Student Success, and Equity at Gavilan College in Gilroy, California. For me, it’s all about creating a community where students and colleagues know they’re supported and never alone in their journey
